“中国书画需要有诗境的感情和思想”——中国毛笔画大师王子和先生对国画意识的看法。
中国毛笔书画大师王子和先生最近把越过两千多年美丽和精致的中国水墨画带到亚省未而震动一时。王先生专於古代人物——如大诗人,艺术家、思想家。他的国际画展曾在日本、星加坡、香港、美国等地展出过,现在他把这光荣带到加拿大来。
在中国以他年岁的画家,王先生数算第四位(现年四十三岁)。他现於黑龙江省书画院教授,黑龙江省与亚省结为孪生省,今次这位画家的探访是由中国政府,亚省中央及国际政府业务处、亚省文化视觉美术和表演艺术部主办。这里官方希望像这样的探访能够成为永久的交流计划,不单是中国还与其他的国家有所交流。
玛丽莲美术教育和视觉艺术部副董事长说“我想这对来探访的艺术家,他们的国家和我们视觉美术家及视觉艺术的安排有很大的益处和帮助。”王先生今年一月起在埃德蒙顿居留至四月,在此期间他十分之忙,他在海狸屋(Beavor Horse)分别教授了五个班别,共150多名学生,他还到各中学直接表演毛笔画的技巧,他更到亚省大学(MNIVERSITY OF ALBGRTA), 加理大学(MNIVERSITY OF Calgaey)和亚省美术学院分别讲学,而且在四月一号至四月十四号在埃德蒙顿亚省博物馆举行了一个重大的个人展览会。展出了王先生从中国带来的48张作品。这次展览受到了良好的批评及广大观众的喜爱。
玛丽莲观察者说“这整个事情十分成功”“我们很高兴,王先生也很高兴,他的学生们更高兴。”
玛丽莲说,虽然画家不说英语,全部课程全经翻译,但今次海狸屋(Beavor Horse)的画班报名人数超过太多了,她说“我们真的不能满足他们的需求”“这便是一个很明显的评论,很多人对这次国画班有极大的兴趣。还有我们要指出的是今次来上课的学生,加籍华人与非华裔的加拿大人,人数大致各半。”
王先生的旅程终於四月份,在一个下午里,经他们的翻译,王先生与我们交谈了几分钟。虽然他很明显的想回家去,但他表示感到很愉快,因为他是第一个中国画家到访亚省。
问他今次停留中最理想的地方,王先生很快的指出他在亚省博物馆的画展是一刻的印象,他又加说道,将来有机会他希望可以画一些在这里看过的景物。

A Visitor from the East
“Chinese painting demands a poetic state of feeling or mind.”— Chinese brush painter Wang Zihe from The Aesthetic Consciousness of Chinese Painting.

Now over 2,000 years old, the beautiful and delicate art of Chinese brush painting recently took this province by storm in the person of visiting Chinese master Wang Zihe.
Mr.Wang, who specializes in the historical portraiture of China`s great poets, artists and thinkers,has international exhibits in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States,and now Canada to his creddit.
Regarded as the fourth-best brush painter of his age group (he is 43) in China, Mr.Wang teaches at the Heilongjiang Province. Heilong Jiang is the province twinned with Alberta,and the artist`s four-month Visit was sponsored jointly by the Chinese govemmental Affairs, and Alberta,Culture`s Visual Arts and Performing Arts branches. Officials Here are hopeful such trips can eventually become part of anon-going exchange program,not only with China, but other countries as well.
“We think it`s beneficial both to the viaiting artists and his conuntry ,as well as to our visual artists and visual arts programs,” says Marilyn Kimura, assistant diector of art eduction for the Visual Arts Branch.
Residing in Edmonton from, January to April this year, Mr.Wang was certainly kept busy. He taught five workshops at Beaver House to a total of 150 students, gave demonstrations of brush painting technique in several highschools, and served as a guest lecturer at the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and Alberta College of Art.
Furthermore, from April 1-14, the Provincial Museum of Alberta, in Edmonton, played host to a major exhibition of 48 of the artist`s paintings, broughe over from China. The exhibition was well received by critics and the public alike.
“The whole thing has been very successful,” observes Marilyn Kimura. “We`re pleased,Mr.Wang is pleased, and students have been pleased.”Acording to Kimura, the Beaver House workshops were all overSubscribed. This despite the fact the artist speaks no Einglish,and hAd to teach entirely throught translation.
“We just couldn`t meet the demand,” she says. “And perhaps thAt`s the most telling comment of all. It shows what a tremendous in terest there is here in Chinese brushwork.” In support of this comment, it should be pointed out that the workshops were attended in nearly equal numbers by Chinese- and non-Chinese Canadians.
With his trip winding down in late April, Mr. Wang spoke with us through his translator for a few minutes one aftermoon. Though he was obviously looking forward to getting home again, he expressed real pleasure at having been the first visiting Chinese artist in Alberta.
Asked about the highlights of his stay, Mr. Wang was quick to point to his exhibition at the Provincial Museum as a favourite memory.
Not surprisingly, he also enjoyed his travels around the province, particularly to the Rocky Mountains and Banff, plus a weekend trip to Vancouver, where he took in an exhibition of, of all things,600 Years of Chinese Painting, at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
“The nicest city in the world,” he said of Vancouver.
Of the work he`d viewed by Alberta artists, it was the Edmonton Art Gallery`s March retrospective of paintings and drawings by 80 year-old lllingworth Kerr that drew the most favourable response from Mr. Wang.
Moving to the subject of his Beaver House workshop, the artist was candid enough to admit that most of his students had struggled, but diplomatic enough to stress that they had all worked very hard to get the hang of brush painting. The major problem, he continued, was that Canadians, even those of Chinese descent, know little of the culture, history and art of China, and as such begin with a distinct disadvantage.
One thing that did please Mr. Wang, though, was the high level of art appreciation he perceived among Canadians. Artists seem to be well respected, he said, and Canadians study their art conscientiously.
He was also impressed by the facilities for visual artists here—the scenery, and modern equipment, and efficient transportation system.
“Canada is a very beautiful country. It made a deep imression on me,” he concluded, then added that he hoped someday to paint somehing of what he saw here.
